LIFE: Spring Summer 2012

On Sunday September 18th, London designer Alexandra Groover unveils her eagerly-awaited sixth collection at the Old Curiosity Shop in Holborn, London.

This season sees the premier of LIFE, the second in Groover's trilogy of short films. Continuing to explore the concept of origin and separation, her latest film deals with growth and independence within a family structure. Directed by Au Matt and Sandra Russell, and featuring soundtracks by family friend musicians Cutbang and Dave.i.d, the film was shot in two parts - the first taking place in Groover’s birthplace of San Diego, California, with family members acting as crew, and the second in London’s iconic Hampstead Heath Park with the help of Groover's London family of close friends.

In LIFE a large black rosebud slowly begins to blossom on the shoreline of Southern California, only to reveal the intense fuchsia faces of five performers who uncoil themselves into a meandering line of one, long interconnected dress. As they twist and turn across the screen, the slashes of fabric joining them together billow in the wind, and their snake-like procession exits into the bright sunlight of San Diego and re-emerges against the awe-inspiring backdrop of London’s Hampstead Heath where it all ends in an explosive finale.

This season Groover’s collection features softly draped pieces of black fabric that are slashed into rose petal and rose leaf-inspired formations to reveal delicately balanced glimpses of bare flesh. In keeping with her signature style, several of the pieces invite the wearer to play with and personalise the garments according to individual style and needs. The collection also features a second season of Groover's exciting experimental collaboration with London footwear designer Benjamin John Hall.

In addition to LIFE, Groover has recently collaborated with filmmaker Gabriel Gettman on a non-black dress for the spectral main character in his short film Caecilia, which also premiers this September.

After studying at Central St. Martins and RISD, and working in the studios of Alexander McQueen and Zandra Rhodes, Alexandra Groover launched her first collection for Autumn Winter 2009. With press from i-D, Dazed, Vogue.com, Harpers Bazaar and Grey, and collaborations with cult bands SunnO))) and Bo Ningen, Groover has rapidly gained a strong following within the fashion, art and music industries.

On Friday February 18th, London designer Alexandra Groover unveiled her eagerly-awaited fifth collection to a packed crowd at the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons in Holborn, London.

BIRTH is the first in a trilogy of short films. Exploring the concept of origin and separation, her latest collection emerges from the dark sea and chalk-white rocks that form the backdrop to the film. Directed by Au Matt and featuring a soundtrack by female artist AGF, the film was shot beneath the otherworldly cliffs of Birling Gap where Groover's sharp and striking silhouettes boldly contrast the pale, muted coastline.

Groover's latest collection is constructed of squares of fabric that metamorphose into soft, cubic shapes against the body. Once again she invites the wearer to play with and personalize the garments, and the experimental pieces presented in BIRTH are just a few snips away from being transformed into more wearable designs. In addition to women's, unisex, and men's pieces, the collection also features an exciting new collaboration with London footwear-designer Benjamin John Hall.

For the second season in a row, Groover’s short film presentation is part of an exciting creative venture with fashion and events photographer Christopher James of WeKnowWhatYouDidLastNight.com.
With a nod to her coastal California upbringing and signature monochrome palette, Groover’s latest collection is entitled Sea Smoke. Inspired by a US Navy image of fog lingering on the surface of the ocean, Groover has created a short film that marries the mystery of being lost in the haze with the meditative feeling evoked by the vastness of the open sea. Filmed by Fritz Stolberg, it features a track from cult drone musician and regular collaborator Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))) fame.
Groover’s pieces invite the wearer to play with the garments and style them in their own personal way. In the film, tubes of black jersey metamorphose into different styles and silhouettes by the simple act of pulling a drawstring.
In addition to her women’s collection, this season Groover will also launch a selection of her first unisex pieces. Intended as an introduction to her male admirers, they represent a taste of the menswear to come.

AW10 London Fashion Week Show

This Sunday February 21^st, London designer Alexandra Groover unveils her eagerly awaited third collection at WeKnowWhatYouDidLastNight at 20 Beak Street. Striking out with a new independent London Fashion Week venue, the presentation is part of an exciting creative venture with fashion and events photographer Christopher James of WeKnowWhatYouDidLastNight.com.

In keeping with her natural influences and signature monochrome palette, Groover’s latest collection is entitled Encre Noir (French for Black Ink), a reference to her inspiration of octopi. Merging fine art with fashion, the show will be presented as a choreographed piece that echoes the undulation of octopus tentacles.

Groover has also been busy working on a special project with cult drone musician Stephen O’Malley of Sunn0))) fame. Following the huge success of their collaborative SS10 fashion film the duo have now joined forces again to design the robes for the latest Sunn0))) tour in support of the band’s new album, Monoliths and Dimensions.

This season, Groover’s signature all black collection features another intriguing selection of architectural silhouettes inspired by the natural sciences. Building on her previous inspiration of the spiraling shapes of shells, Groover moves from water to land, this time exploring the unfurling shapes of fern fronds with a fresh Spring Summer wardrobe which includes swimwear and hats. The collection is accompanied by dramatic statement jewellery designed in collaboration with Jane Groover.

And as if that isn’t enough, Alexandra Groover has also been specially selected along with seven other influential designers including Mark Fast, Hannah Marshall, and Avsh Alom Gur, to design and make a bespoke dress for the All Walks Beyond The Catwalk event at LFW. Sponsored by the BFC and inspired by the charity B-Eat, this event is in support of diversity in the modeling industry and the designs have also been shot as a photostory for the current issue of i-D magazine. The live event will take place on September 18th in the BFC Portico Room at LFW and will feature an exhibition of images from the shoot.

Alexandra Groover Pop-up Shop At KiosKiosk! Aug 2nd and 3rd

Alexandra Groover will have a pop-up shop as part of the Design Museum’s Super Contemporary exhibit this August 2nd and 3rd at KiosKiosk, which is located in the More London site next to the Mayor’s building on the Thames. Sponsored by the Mayor of London and created by London designers Wayne and Geraldine Hemingway, KiosKiosk is an innovative project that uses the concept of a 'pop-up' kiosk to provide a platform for up and coming creative entrepreneurs. Groover will be showcasing a specially curated selection of garments, accessories and one-off pieces for sale at the kiosk. Taking inspiration from the architecture of nature, Groover’s signature monochromatic black collection focuses mainly on silhouette and sculptural shape.

Sponsored by the prestigious Vauxhall Fashion Scout Award, London designer Alexandra Groover will make her catwalk debut at London Fashion Week in February 2009. Taking as her inspiration the architecture of shells, Groover combines the sculptural properties of felted wool with body-skimming bias cut silk, to create designs both timeless and avant-garde - the hallmark of her luxurious Black Label. The show will also feature the more casual Grey Label, which has been described as 'a series of kinetic garments inspired by the graceful movements of jellyfish.'

She and her partner Tomi (hair stylist) have also recently taken a great series of J Smith Esquire hats, which you can view on SYK's website. Alexandra Groover and Lauren McCarthy Present A Dress Collaboration
For Dark Art Dress

In the spirit of Halloween and Bonfire night, Alexandra Groover has collaborated with fellow designer Lauren McCarthy to create two special dresses for the Dark Art Dress exhibit, which takes place from the 5th to the 8th of November at St Pancras Crypt Gallery, London. Inspired by the 17th century French Sorceress La Voisin and the surrealist game of Exquisite Corpse, the two dresses exhibited fit perfectly into the current Autumn-Winter trend of soft gothic glamour. In addition to the static exhibit, there will also be special projects and performances taking place inside the gallery throughout the week.

FASHION SHOW IN AID OF LIMB POWER CHARITY

Alexandra Groover will have a fashion show with a live soundtrack performed by specially curated musicians on Sunday the 21st of September at 3pm in conjuntion with the charity organization Limb Power. It is an all-day event, but you can book a ticket for 12-6 pm at a cost of 6 pounds, the profits of which go to the Limb Power fund.

Alexandra Groover Presents Black Label 2: Soft Shell

This season sees the launch of the second series of Alexandra Groover’s luxury Black Label dresses. Soft Shell is a continuation of Groover’s experiments with the theme of shell architecture and a contrast to the rigid felted wool structures of her Black Label 1 designs. Using the original Black Label 1 patterns, Groover has transformed their silhouettes by remaking each design using only soft silk satin to reveal more feminine and draped versions of her first collection.

Alexandra Groover Presents Grey Label 3: Hydromedusae

The casual sister label to Groover’s luxurious Black Label, Grey Label is now in its third series. Grey Label 3 incorporates Groover’s recent fabric experiments using simple techniques to create visually complicated designs. By simply cutting vertical strips into cotton jersey, Groover has created a series of kinetic dresses inspired by the graceful movements of jellyfish. To illustrate the kinetic properties of the collection, Groover collaborated with her husband musician Jack Shirt and model Linn Carin Dirdal to create a short film which can be viewed on her website www.alexandragroover.com.
